Today we are going behind the scenes for a day of farm work! These pictures track a day of working on the farm on Tuesday July 23:
7:15 am: Farm crew morning meeting. We go over the day’s tasks, which often change as we go but always best to start with a plan. |
The day’s plans are written on the white board. Sometimes the plans are broken down by groups of farmers who will complete each task. Other times we draw arrows to indicate who is doing what. |
7:30 am: Packing produce for our Giving Program. Each food pantry will receive around 200 lbs of summer produce weekly. |
8:00 am: Time to walk out to the fields to start the next task. |
8:00 am- 9:00 am: Pick up plastic mulch in the strawberry field and finish cleaning the field so that it can be put into cover crop. |
9:00 am- 9:15 am: Lay irrigation lines in the new bed of lettuce that was planted yesterday. We got rain last night so they don’t need to be turned on today. |
9:30 am- 10:30 am: Clean up a large silage tarp that was on two beds that will need seeding with carrots in the afternoon. The silage tarps keep the beds dry. |
These tarps also help with weed control. They are laid down 4 weeks before planting to force weeds to germinate before we plant the beds. The weeds die under the tarps so that we have less weeding to do once our carrots are growing. |
10:30-12 pm: Carrot harvest! These are the last of the spring carrots to be harvested. |
11:30 am: Ice pop time! Ice pop orders are taken and retrieved for the carrot harvesters. |
1:30- 2:30 pm: After lunch, we seed carrots on the beds that we folded the silage tarps off. We push the seeder in four rows and use the roller that is designed for carrot seed. |
1:30- 3:00 pm: In another field the crew harvests cantaloupes. The melons are first harvested into piles and then thrown between people to be put into the bins in the truck. They are then counted and moved to the CSA harvest house. |
3:00 pm- 5:00 Trellising tomatoes which is done about once a week because they grow so fast. We use a PVC pipe to pull the trellis string through as we string up the plants. |
5:00 pm: Time to go home! Drive up the lane past the pretty flower fields. |
