What vegetables can I expect in a Summer CSA Farm Share?
The list of what we grow in the summer can be found on this page.
What will I get for my CSA share?
Your CSA share will include either a 4-unit or a 6-unit share weekly pickup for 24 weeks. A “unit” is essentially one “item” you’d typically get at a farmer’s market or grocery store: a bunch of carrots, a bag of lettuce, or a head of cabbage. Value of the shares is approximately equivalent to the same local organic produce in grocery stores, but members receive significantly more value through You-Pick opportunities and bumper crops.
Do you have fruit?
Our farm grows strawberries and blackberries which are included in your CSA share. We don’t grow any other fruit (although some the veggies we grow are technically a “fruit” like tomatoes and cucumbers!)
We partner with North Star Orchard to offer our farm as a pick up site for their fruit share. This is a popular add-on to the veggie CSA. Only our current CSA members can pick up their fruit share at Pennypack Farm. Non-CSA members have other regional pickup options if they want a fruit share. Signups, payments, and communication about the fruit share should be directly with the orchard. For more info: https://northstarorchard.com/fruit-share-csa
What is the schedule of pickups?
The season will start in late May/early June until mid-November. We typically start the Wednesday after Memorial Day but our start date is pending on the spring weather. The season runs for 24 weeks.
Each share household chooses a consistent pickup day – either Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. You come each week during the season during the pickup times of 2:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
How will the Summer Pickup work with COVID19?
As of guidelines in May 2021, we are opening up our harvest house to summer members. We will require masks while in line for pickup and in the harvest house. We will limit the numbers of members indoors at one time.
Our top priority is the safety for members, staff, and volunteers.
What if I need to change my pickup day or I forget to pick up?
If you anticipate a needed switch in advance please email CSA@pennypackfarm.org at least two days prior to your pickup week to request the change. Due to the quantity of vegetables available each day, we must limit the amount of pickup switches each week. Please do not show up on a day that you have not selected without prior approval.
If you have forgotten to pick up your share, you can email CSA@pennypackfarm.org to see if there are any spots available to pick up the next pickup day – but there is no guarantee because we can only accomodate a certain number of members each pickup day. We are unable to allow for a double pickup the following week. Please make every attempt to send someone on your behalf if you’re unable to get to the farm.
Are you offering curbside pickup?
We are not offering a regular option for parking lot pickups. For members who have health concerns and do not want to interact with others, even outdoors, we ask you to make every attempt to send someone on your behalf during your regular pickup window. For a one-time season exception, you may email our staff before noon on your pickup day to make special arrangements CSA@pennypackfarm.org
Do I have to do volunteer hours with my summer share?
Yes, we ask for 4 volunteer hours from each share household during the summer season (May-November). There will be many opportunities, including weekends. Many of the volunteer tasks are child-friendly but please double check before signing up. We have an online volunteer software called Volgistics and the signup schedule is updated throughout the summer as help is needed.
If you cannot fulfil your share duty, you can buy it out for $75.
What if there is inclement weather?
Pickups happen in all types of weather, including rain and heatwaves. If there happens to be a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning, we may need to make a last minute change for the safety of staff and members. If we need to close, or reschedule pickups, we will email as soon as that decision is made and we will work with members to make sure they get their vegetables that week.
Please wear appropriate clothing and shoes as members will be outdoors, and our walkways can be wet or muddy.
