It seems that it is going to be a hot summer! And so far it has also been quite dry as well. We have been irrigating the crops frequently to keep everything growing. Thankfully we have plenty of water pressure to keep all the fields running at once.
In order to stay cool in this weather we take plenty of ice pop breaks. Despite the high temps, there is still a lot to do around the farm. We are currently working on our onion harvest and are happy to report that the yields are quite good this year!
The other onion varieties will go directly into our curing hoop houses after harvest. The curing process involves laying out all the onions on grates with their stems still on. After the stems are fully dry we will cut them off and bag the onions to share out over the next few months. We try to grow as many onions as possible because we know they are quite a popular item!

The other big task we are currently working on is preparing for the fall plantings. We have planted many of our fall crops in the greenhouse including kale, cabbage, kohlrabi, radicchio, and lettuce. They will be transplanted later in July and early August. We will also seed our fall carrots this week and have already prepared and covered the beds for the winter carrots that will be seeded in August. It’s hard to believe that we are already thinking ahead to the cooler months!
